The Mulberry Patch which will be landscaped and designed according to Perma-culture parameters, will focus on Mori-culture, growing Morus Rubra (Red Mulbery trees) to feed the Bombyx Mori larvae (silk worm) to practice Seri-Culture, the production of cocoons for export to the International Silk Marketplace. These practices will form the vehicle for the project's financial sustainability, utilising slope reclamation and the agro-practices necessary to reclaim the 20 acre rab land at Haggatts. The mulberry shrubs, in three storey plantings will be inter-cropped with fruit trees, herbs, cut flowers and legumes (soya, peas, beans) to nourish the soil and optimise the nutritional properties of the Mulberry. Every part of the Mulberry shrub has a medicinal value unsurpassed in the treatment of rheumatics and arthrities-related problems. The plant is also a well-known, high protein livestock feed.
In the interest of Conservation and best water practices, an Aquapond will be strategically sited to ensure surface water storage and catchment capability. The Aquapond, which will form a complete ecosystem, will be fenced for safety and stocked with Water lilies, azola, and other water plants to feed tilapia, ornamentals and indigenous Macrobraeken Rogenburgie will provide oxygen indicators. Duck stacks will be introduced to this eco-system during Phase 2.
The Mulberry Patch will establish a conservatory/shadehouse/polyhouse for mulberry and other crop propogation, and the opportunity is available for subcontracting small farm opportunities and seed bank development; perennials and annuals will make up the bulk of stocked seed and other plants and ornamentals will be retailed from this site.
It is intended that energy and other conservation practices be utilised to optimise the running of the Mulberry Patch facility. Solar energy will be captured for use in water heating, pump systems for irrigation and a solar oven for drying fruit and herbs and sterilising clay. Photovoltaics will be considered during phase 2 and wind and biogas/methanogizer technology will be integrated for incorporation of resulting effluent into fertigation practices.
Agro by-products such as Mulberry Mulch, Mix, and Manure, will be branded and packaged in the distinctive Mulberry Patch colour scheme for retail sales along with local preserves, hand painted silk end products, neutriceuticals and cut and dried flowers among others. Mr. Rudy Gibson's bee-hives are located on the site and we are seeking to network our marketing efforts. A local Vinter will be contracted to produce a Mulberry Patch House Wine and the Mulbery Patch will provide fruit musts to that operation. Kombucha, Reishi and Shiitake Mushrooms and other edible fungus colonies will be established in huts throughout the acreage. The potential for retail from the site can be realised by reclaiming the ruined buildings and structures on the proposed Haggatts site within it's Heritage Signature.
